In 2024, Nathan McCarthy and his brother campaigned to open an abandoned community Centre at 134 Shepherd St. Darlington, which had been abandoned for 3 years. 

After moving into a small, carpeted terrace house in Darlington, he had noticed there was nowhere nearby to paint and make art without spending alot of money.

Nathan and his brother created a community campaign with over 100 doors knocked, and signatures gained. The campaign was largely successful and the centre is now open as a free-to-hire community space, with many local art communities using the space frequently, including two mental health art groups, a dance group, a community music jam group, a sewing group and Nathan's own art class.

Nathan runs a weekly art class called ArtCRAFT, and a biweekly class for those who are neurodivergent or queer. These classes are frequented by many locals, and is a great opportunity to create some art for free and engage with your neighbours.
